Incident reporting – Commercial vessels

Prompt reporting ensures that incidents are properly recorded, investigated where necessary, and used to improve safety across the maritime industry.

The Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessels) National Law Act 2012 requires both the owner and master of a domestic commercial vessel involved in a marine incident to report the incident to the National Regulator within the required timeframes.

Reporting a commercial vessel incident

Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is the national authority responsible for receiving and managing reports of commercial vessel incidents in Australian waters. Reporting incidents to AMSA helps improve maritime safety, support investigations, and prevent future accidents.
