About VHF radios

Tasmania is served by a network of VHF base and repeater stations that provide coverage along almost the entire coastline, making VHF radio one of the most reliable forms of marine communication. Unlike HF radio and 27 MHz communications, VHF is generally not affected by ionospheric or atmospheric conditions, ensuring more consistent performance. VHF channels are monitored around the clock by volunteer coast stations and port authorities, while shipping and commercial vessels continuously monitor VHF Channel 16, the international distress and calling channel.

In addition, VHF talk-through repeaters significantly extend the effective operating range of a vessel’s VHF radio, improving communication coverage over greater distances.
