Regulation of marine farm leases

The marine farming industry is regulated by the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania under the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 and the Marine Farming Planning Act 1995.

Marine farms are an important feature of many Tasmanian waterways and support the state’s aquaculture industry. Marine farming operations can include fish pens, shellfish farms, navigation marks, and other infrastructure that may affect navigation. Boaters should remain vigilant when operating near marine farms, observe all navigation markers, and allow ample clearance from farming equipment and service vessels

How are marine farms marked

Marine Farming leases are generally marked at their extremities by special marks. These markers are yellow in colour and may have lights and a cross.

Where to find locations and maps of marine farms

Mariners should try to avoid navigating within the lease, as there may be underwater hazards that are not charted or easily apparent when navigating in the vicinity.
