M161-26 Macquarie Harbour – Betsys Bay & Liberty Bay – Research Area
Mariners are advised that the University of Tasmania’s Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) will be conducting works for the purposes of an endangered species rehabilitation project in the vicinity of Table Head, commencing 27 April 2026.
A research area has been declared on this site, pursuant to the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (Tas). All vessels not directly involved in activities associated with the project are prohibited from entering the area without the permission of IMAS or its agents while the declaration is in place.
Section 143 of the Living Marine Resource Management Act 1995 provides for the declaration of a specified area to be a research area and the restriction of entry, fishing or any other matter within that research area.
The research area is comprised of all waters surrounding Betsys Bay and Liberty Bay bound by an imaginary line commencing from the point latitude 42° 16.809’ South, longitude 145° 15.195’ East; then to the point latitude 42° 16.445’ South, longitude 145° 16.226’ East; then to the point latitude 42° 17.247’ South, longitude 145° 18.831’ East.
Mariners should navigate with caution in the area and not enter the declared research area.
