M208-25 Bass Strait – Burnie – Aquaculture Trial and Research Area

Mariners are advised that the Blue Economy Cooperative Research Centre (BE CRC) will be installing marine aquaculture infrastructure for the purposes of a research project north of Burnie, commencing 12 May 2025 for an initial 8 month period.

A research area has been declared on this site, pursuant to the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995 (Tas). All vessels not directly involved in activities associated with the project are prohibited from entering the marked area while the declaration is in place.

Section 143 of the Living Marine Resource Management Act 1995, and the Memorandum of Understanding between the Commonwealth of Australia and the Crown in Right of Tasmania to support the implementation and operation of an aquaculture research trial in Commonwealth waters adjoining Tasmanian waters in Bass Strait provides for the declaration of a specified area to be a research area and the restriction of entry, fishing or any other matter within that research area.

IALA yellow special markers (lit) will be deployed at the co-ordinates shown below and remain in place for the duration of the project.
