It has a Board of five Directors, four appointed by the Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Chief Executive. Representation is drawn from the various sectors of the boating community. The Board is responsible to the Minister for the performance by the Authority of its functions and in ensuring that the business and affairs of the Authority are managed and conducted in a manner that is in accordance with sound commercial practice.
MAST has three primary functions which are conferred by the Marine and Safety Authority Act 1997 as follows:
- To ensure the safe operation of vessels;
- To provide and manage marine facilities; and
- To manage environmental issues relating to vessels
MAST has jurisdiction in and over:
- The waters of all inland lakes, rivers and streams;
- Coastal waters
- Any vessel not covered by Commonwealth legislation; and
- Any marine facility under the control of the Authority
